What is Changing Directions?
- Turning today’s problems, into tomorrow’s solutions.
Serenity Farm is privileged to
offer Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Canine Assisted Psychotherapy
(CAP) as an activity based model of counseling.
Beginning the program in 2000,
our staff has witnessed this solution-based method of counseling
to be extremely beneficial in creating changed behavioral patterns
with the clientele that comes through the program.
Using carefully selected horses and canines, our licensed professional
staff handles weekly individual or small group appointments. Our
staff members that co-facilitate the counseling program are professionals
with specialized fields that went on to make the commitment to add
the EAP/CAP model of therapy to their careers.
During an EAP/CAP session, clients work with a trained animal specialist
and licensed therapist to work through selected activities and then
process their findings from the appointment.
Specialized areas typically addressed through
this program are:
- Understanding appropriate boundaries
- Learning to cope with stressors
- Developing respect for self and others
- Developing positive relationships
- Breaking down emotional barriers
- Learning to trust
- Conquering anger (finding the triggers and
managing anger)
- Setting and meeting goals
- Improving communication skills
- Facing fears and taking risks
- Increasing confidence
- Developing teamwork and cooperation
- Understanding and developing healthy relationships
Why horses and dogs?
Horses and dogs are very much like humans in that they are social
animals. Each has distinct personalities, attitudes, and moods.
Most importantly, horses and dogs have an ability to mirror what
human behavior is telling them. These characteristics make them
especially powerful messengers and provide vast opportunities for
learning and facilitating positive change. Clients learn to take
risks and face fears.
When working with horses, clients
think “outside the box,” helping them develop creative
problem solving skills. EAP/CAP sessions place an emphasis on the
unique life circumstances of each individual client. EAP/CAP is
tailored to fit the client’s needs and is not approached in
a “one size fits all” manner.

are confident in the EAGALA model of co-facilitating. With the use
